Brand vs brand

Technology comparisons

Why compare heat pump brands?

Brand choice has a real impact on the numbers that matter over a 15–20 year install. Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) swings your annual running cost by hundreds of pounds. Outdoor unit noise dB(A) can be the difference between passing permitted development rules and needing a full planning application. Warranty length, spares availability and the size of the UK service network all affect what happens when something goes wrong five years in.

What we look at in every comparison

  • SCOP at 35, 45 and 55°C flow — the higher, the cheaper to run.
  • Modulation range — how low the unit can turn down on mild days.
  • Refrigerant — R290 (propane) for higher flow temps vs R32 for efficiency.
  • Warranty terms — length, parts-only vs labour, and registration requirements.
  • MCS approval — required for the BUS grant.
  • UK service coverage — engineer availability and typical response times.

Picking the right comparison for you

A final caveat: brand matters, but installer quality matters more. The best manufacturer on paper can be undermined by a poorly designed system. When you’ve shortlisted two or three brands, get quotes from MCS installers and ask each to justify their brand choice for your property.
