Heat Pump Annual Maintenance: What It Costs and What to Expect
Heat pumps need servicing like any heating system. Here is what an annual service covers, what it costs (£100-200 typically), and what the manufacturer warranty requires.
Heat pumps are simpler mechanically than gas boilers - no combustion, no flue, no annual gas safety check required. But they do need annual servicing to maintain efficiency and keep the manufacturer warranty valid.
A standard heat pump service typically costs £100-200 per year and takes 1-3 hours. It covers: cleaning the outdoor unit coils and checking airflow clearance, checking refrigerant pressure and circuit integrity, inspecting electrical connections, testing controls and thermostat calibration, checking the hot water cylinder operation, reviewing error logs, and cleaning or replacing air filters where fitted.
Most major manufacturers (Mitsubishi, Vaillant, Daikin) require annual servicing by an approved engineer to maintain the full 5-7 year manufacturer warranty. Using an unqualified engineer or skipping services can void warranty coverage on parts and labour claims.
Heat pump servicing is quite different from boiler servicing. Not all heating engineers are qualified - look for an engineer who is both MCS-certified and has brand-specific training from the manufacturer (e.g., Mitsubishi's Ecodan Advance programme, Vaillant's VaillantPRO network). Using a generic heating engineer without heat pump specific training risks missed issues.
Additional costs to budget for: refrigerant top-up if there is a minor leak (£150-400 depending on amount needed), replacement of minor components (expansion vessel, pressure relief valve) over a 10-15 year period (£100-500 per incident), and controls/thermostat updates which some manufacturers issue as paid upgrades.
Over a 20-year lifespan, total maintenance costs (excluding major component replacements) are typically £2,000-4,000 - comparable to a gas boiler's maintenance costs when gas safety certificates, annual services, and typical repairs are included. The absence of a gas safety check (£50-80/year for boilers) partially offsets the slightly higher service cost.
